It's been a BIG week for Suzuki Auto SA, quite literally

If the South African automotive space could be compared to grilled chicken, particularly Portuguese grilled chicken, then Suzuki would have to be the “Pedros” of the new car market; double the flavour, double the value, half the price and ready to ruffle some feathers!

Suzuki seems to be on a massive winning streak with their recent model launches. This week, the automotive manufacturer did not fail to wow us, when they unveiled their all-new, practical, multi-purpose, SUV-design-inspired, 6-seater passenger vehicle, the XL6.

Unlike the rather ambiguous naming of the Fronx, the XL6 nameplate pretty much sums up the vehicle; extra large, 6-seater vehicle, aimed at growing families and consumers looking for more space and comfort. The XL6 boasts a unique seating configuration for 6 people, with two captain seats and luggage space that can be extended to 692L from 209L, when the 2nd and 3rd rows of seats are folded.

The XL6 is powered by the Suzuki's K15B engine. A tried and tested power plant, that is available in either the 5-speed manual or 4-speed Auto. Both configurations offer identical fuel economy and performance. The naturally aspirated engine is good for 77kW and 138Nm of torque.

I had the privilege of driving the 1.5 GLX Auto over the launch days and being the top-of-the-range model, meant the vehicle had a host of additional features and comforts; like the dual-tone paint, automatic headlamps, electric folding side mirrors with key sync, full leather upholstery and hill-hold control.

While these additional features come at around a R20 000 premium, on top of a starting price of R329 900, rest assured that Suzuki has still made plenty of features available in the entry-level model too.

Some of the key features that are standard on even the entry-level GL models are the LED Headlamps with DRL, keyless entry and start, a 7” Touchscreen infotainment system, Reverse camera, ABS, EBD, dual-front airbags and rear air-conditioning.

Design-wise, up-front the XL6 boasts Suzuki’s continuous headlight design, a bold front grille, SUV styling with front and rear skid plates, cladded wheel arches and an impressive ground clearance of 180mm. The XL6 is available in 6 colours and the GLX is available in 3 dual-tone colours.

The interior of the XL6 is simplistic and elegant. You will find a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, with Apple Carplay and Android Auto, AC ventilated cup holders, front footwell illumination and keyless entry with push button start. The 4.2-inch LCD located in the middle of the cluster provides a range of driving information like instantaneous and average fuel consumption, engine power and torque display. The GLX is specced with leather seats as well, something that definitely makes the upgrade worth every cent if you have kids.

In conclusion, the Suzuki XL6 is a spacious and comfortable vehicle that offers a six-seater configuration, making it a suitable choice for families and those needing extra passenger space. Its distinctive design gives it a more rugged appearance and whilst the engine may not be the most powerful in its class, it undoubtedly delivers decent performance for city and highway driving. The ride quality is generally smooth, and the third-row seating offers versatility. However, some users might find the third-row space slightly tight for adults on longer journeys.

In conclusion, the Suzuki XL6 offers a good balance of style, space and practicality for those in need of a family-friendly vehicle at an amazing price point- the most affordable in its class of vehicles.

Jameel Ismail - Freelance Motoring Journalist | Automotive Content Creator | Advanced Driving Instructor

My journey into the world of motoring started at a very young age, using crayons to sketch concept cars on my bedroom wall. My parents, of course, were less than thrilled about the artwork, but they could not deny the sheer enthusiasm and passion that I exuded when it came to anything with wheels.

Ever since I remember, vehicles moved me, in more ways than one. I know I have my dad to thank for that, a freelance motoring journalist for more than three decades, someone who has devoted his life to road safety and motoring. Today, I follow in his footsteps in several ways, but also bring a few new ideas and skills to the table. I enjoy writing and talking about cars, but I also enjoy creating content in the form of automotive photography and videos.

I’ve been in the marketing industry for over 10 years, and I understand the importance of social media in today’s times, therefore I focus a lot of my attention on various platforms to further my reach and bring motoring, travel and South Africa to my followers.

But when I’m not hunched over my keyboard writing about the latest car I have on test, I can be found camera-in-hand travelling South Africa on my quest to “Find an Adventure”.

Currently, I enjoy writing articles that cover new vehicle launches, car culture, industry news, road safety and road trips, I also produce and co-host a weekly motoring radio show called Bumper 2 Bumper - a multi-award winning and the longest running Motoring and lifestyle radio show in South Africa.
