‘Ladies and gentlemen, please come and take a seat. The only action permitted here is laughter, joy, and full-on relaxation’, that is what the atmosphere at the comedy show felt like.

On Saturday, the 10th of February at The Theatre on the Square, Sandton it, was an incredible Comics Choice Awards Weekend Comedy Showcase. What a better way to usher into a relaxing last day of the weekend. After all, a wholehearted good belly laugh does keep the doctor away.

The people of the hour were Award Winning South African Comedian, Dillan Oliphant, the host with the most and two times Comics Choice Award Winner, Kagiso KG Mokgadi, Stand Up Comic, writer and actor Robby Collins and Award-Winning StandUp Comedian, Wazi M Kunene.

Why Stand- Up Comedy Matters

Laughter brings us together. Laughter is contagious and makes people feel less stressed about day-to-day worries.

After SONA 2024, people needed something that was actually funny to laugh at. Stand-up comedy is an art form that has been happening for ages upon ages, although it has changed with time, the goal remains the same – to garner laughs.

One crucial thing about comedy is that people will be offended, especially the brave souls who sit in the front row. That is why it important that people go to stand-up comedy shows with an open mind and of course, an extra bag of laughter – just in case things get a bit awkward.

Stand up comedians are superheroes in their own rights. All they have on stage is a mic, a mic stand and a stool. At the end of the night/day, they have the crowd in stitches.

Kagiso KG Mokgadi was an amazing MC! He was very unbiased in his jokes and the crowd couldn’t agree more. He extended his gratitude to the event’s spondors and one of them was Mrs H.S BALLS.

“Comrades, we don’t know if we are still in a state of disaster, or has it become a bigger disaster. We are left to figuring this stuff ourselves. The only thing they (government) did was get a minister of electricity. As we sit here, we have a Minister of Electricity and a Minister of Energy. It’s the same having a Minister of Health and a Minister of Diabetes,”

stated KG Mokgadi, and the crowd couldn’t agree more!

Laughter is the best medicine

Stand-up comedy can be a bit controversial at times and it makes the comedians take a step back, but because time changes everything, comedians are now speaking out their truths. Some comedians cope with loss of loved ones or trauma through their jokes.

“I hope my mother is watching her favourite 7de Laan episode. I believe that all coloured mothers deserve to go to a better place when they die. A place where they don’t have to be strong anymore,”

stated Dillan Oliphant.

Wazi M Kunene, being the only lady on stage did leave the audience with a lot to ponder on. Although her jokes were bit more on a serious note and over 18 jokes, she did encourage ladies to take care of themselves and consider going for pap smear. Health should never be a second choice.

The last act of the night was none other than Robby Collins. He did an incredible job wrapping up the night. The crowd was almost reluctant to leave when the show drew to an end, they still wanted more! Collins cemented the fact that comedians are truly a treasure, no matter where they come from. His facial expressions and body language totally sold the jokes, just like all the acts that had graced the stage that evening.

Reason as to why people should consider going to a comedy show – free medicine. Nothing more and nothing less. You can go by yourself and if you are brave enough, sit in the front row.
