Tea4Kidz a healthier alternative to harmful sugar-laden drinks in school lunches
The New Year means a fresh start for everyone, presenting a great opportunity to get on a healthier track.
This is particularly true for young children whose nutrition will directly impact their cognitive function at school.
In a recent SA National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (SANHANES) focusing on school lunches, it was revealed that South African children are consuming an unhealthily high quantity of sugar in the form of soft drinks.
The survey indicated that as many as two in three school pupils will consume at least two sugar-laden drinks per week. Each drink contains up to 55g of sugar which, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), is 15g more than the daily recommended limit for children.
The impact of excess sugar in a daily diet includes weight gain, tooth decay and general health deterioration, but more than this, it affects a child’s ability to learn. A study by the University of California found that the high consumption of sugar is a likely culprit with in the deterioration of memory and cognitive damage.

In contrast to the harmful effects of sugar-filled soda and fruit drinks, Rooibos tea actually shield’s the child’s brain from stress, as well as protecting against lipid peridoxation – a process whereby free radicals damage brain cells and nerve tissues.
