Volkswagen Motorsport ready to make history at Zwartkops
Volkswagen Motorsport driver Jonathan Mogotsi stands to make history as he leads the South African National SupaCup championship to the Zwartkops Extreme Festival finals on Saturday 19 October.
Backed by rookie teammate Charl Visser, Mogotsi is set to add a first championship to his remarkable career, while the team’s young racer Kyle Visser is out to repeat his maiden Astron Energy Polo Cup victory from the last meeting.
“Jonathan Mogotsi fought his way into motor racing by winning the Volkswagen Driver Search,”
Mike Rowe, Head of Volkswagen Motorsport explains.
“Now he stands on the verge of winning a major National racing championship.”
The 2016 Driver Search was open to young drivers keen to earn a break into racing. That saw Jonathan into a 2017 Volkswagen Polo Cup drive, where he was Junior runner-up in 2018.
Mogotsi arrives at Zwartkops with a thirteen point SupaCup advantage aboard his Genuine Parts Volkswagen Motorsport SupaPolo.
“I’m not one who usually gets too many butterflies in the tummy before a race, but this weekend is a little different,”
Jonathan admits.
“I have often arrived at the championship finals with a chance to win, but never leading the way. So this time it’s a matter of bringing it home. It’s been a dramatic season so far, so nothing’s guaranteed, except that I will put my best foot forward. Let’s do this!”
SupaCup rookie Charl Michael Visser sits a solid third in the SupaCup chase in the Astron Energy SupaPolo.
“I have a great record at Zwartkops, so let’s see if we can keep that going, while also working with the team to help Jonathan take a very significant title,”
Charl Michael admits.
“This has been an incredible season. To work with and drive for Volkswagen Motorsport has been a great privilege and a splendid learning experience and I look forward to closing it off in style.”
Charl Michael earned his 2024 Volkswagen Motorsport seat by winning the 2023 Volkswagen Polo Cup.
Younger brother and Astron Energy Polo Cup rookie Kyle Visser likewise earned his factory seat by winning the 2023 Volkswagen Rookie Cup. He delivered on that promise by winning his first Polo race, and overall at Killarney last time out.
“I am so happy to reward my Volkswagen Motorsport team’s belief in me by winning at Killarney,”
Kyle explains
“That puts me in a position to leapfrog two places up into the championship top three, and that’s our aim this weekend. I can’t wait!”
“Zwartkops promises to be a milestone weekend for Volkswagen Motorsport,”
Mike Rowe concludes.
“Let’s go make a little history!”
