An Open Letter to the President of South Africa
LISTEN TO OUR INTERVIEW WITH SALAAMEDIA ABOUT THE LETTER |
Dear Mr President,
I hope you are well, and keeping safe.
I write this letter to you on behalf of thousands of South Africans who face the same predicament that I do today, who won't be able to pay rent at the end of the month, who won't be able to put food on their tables, and who are not sure what the future holds for them next month.
I write this letter because like many:
We do not qualify for debt relief, because we do not have any debt.
We do not qualify for financial relief, because we do not have any permanent employees.
We do not qualify for tourism relief, because we are not the right BBBEE status.
We do not qualify for social grants, because technically we are not unemployed.
BUT
We pay our taxes.
In fact some of us have even paid UIF while we were employed, but now when we need it the most, we can't access those funds.
The government encourages entrepreneurs, but we are the ones who are suffering the most.
A little background on just our business, and how we are affected.
When my wife and I couldn't find suitable employment, even though we are both university graduates, instead of crying out for the government to help us, we created a platform to assist; the unemployed, the entrepreneurs, the start-ups, the NGOs, and many other South Africans.
We created a platform with an online store where we showcase local talent, not only to South Africans, but to the rest of the world, through this online store, our website, and social media.
We were the first to create a platform where we only share good news via mobile journalism, which other media companies have since followed suit.
In 2015, the time when most South Africans were tired of the government and our then president, we were the first to start using the ❤️🇿🇦 on social media, which everyone now uses to show their solidarity for their love of our country.
Through all the difficulty we face, we continue to promote our beautiful country.
To keep our platform running, we generate income from:
Events which we attend and promote, that have now been cancelled.
Digital advertising and digital marketing campaigns from companies, who now can't afford to use these services, or do not require these services because they are closed.
Our online store which cannot operate, because we are not selling essential goods.
I'm not an economist, nor a politician.
I'm not proposing a new economic system, but rather a system that is fair to all, that doesn't benefit a selected few.
What is your solution for us, and everyone else who is in a similar situation ?
Stay Safe Mr President
Warm Regards
Ziyaad
