Decorex Joburg celebrates Women's Month with imaginative She Shed feature
Two traditional outdoor sheds have been re-imagined into the ultimate female sanctuaries in the inspired She Shed feature, showcasing at Decorex Joburg, presented by Plascon.
This unique #rhythmoflife installation forms part of the extensive features’ programme for the 25th Decorex Joburg, taking place at the Gallagher Convention Centre from 8 to 12 August.
“So often, there is a space inside or outside the home – such as a shed – which has become somewhere that unnecessary items are stored and not looked at again,”
explained Anita Bloom, Creative Director for Decorex SA.
“We want to reclaim these spaces and reinvent them, creating a haven where the woman of the home can relax, partake in her hobbies, and just rediscover her sense of self. The She Shed must be a space just for her.”
Decorex Joburg has partnered with breast cancer awareness NGO, PinkDrive, for this charitable feature. Designers will be collaborating with Plascon, and each She Shed will incorporate a splash of pink to acknowledge the cause with funds raised through a competition run at the show, as well as a donation box located on site. One philanthropic celebritiy has lent her support to the feature, and will be visiting the She Sheds at the exhibition.
Meet the Designers
The first creative to be unleashing her talent on the She Shed is Kgomotso Malope, of Motso Designed, who will be going for an ‘Urban Escape’ design.
“Women, at whatever stage of their lives, have a lot they need to juggle,”
explained Malope.
“At some point it becomes too much, so a woman needs a space where she can go to just be. A space to just do whatever makes her happy…to be quiet, to reach out to her inner self. A She Shed is a woman’s own space to do whatever she needs to do for herself, to refill her well, before she can go and be the best version of herself.”
For the splash of colour, Malope will use Plascon’s Fuscia Fizz (R2-A1-1), a shade of pink she describes as ‘unapologetically bold’.
“This colour is eye-catching and romantically glamorous,”
she continued.
“We will have a feature wall with bold, full wall artwork using Fuscia Fizz. At Motso Designed, our designs are hugely influenced by African art, and Africa as a whole, so the She Shed will feature some artisan textures, something that is really on-trend right now. We will also bring the outdoors in by introducing some pot plants.”
Plascon Media Stylist and Colour Specialist, Kerstin Eser, said:
“We just love that our She Sheds designers have used strong and daring Fuscia Fizz (R2-A1-1) as part of their palette. The ultimate but sophisticated hot pink, it is brave and feminine and epitomises the multi-tasking, trailblazing ladies of today. Used in the right doses it is empowering and uplifting: The perfect colour for a dedicated haven where the modern woman can tap into her inner diva or simply rest and recharge.”
With it’s luxurious plush matt finish, Plascon’s Cashmere is the perfect product to use for your SheShed. This premium product is low in odour, highly washable and stain resistant, making it ideal interior wall coating.
For the second She Shed, Tersia Labuschagne of Lighouse Furniture has selected a very informal style for a striking effect.
“There is so much that is so serious and I think a fun theme for a She Shed will be very effective,”
said Labuschagne.
“Fresh, bright spring flowers, herbs and fruit will simultaneously accent and calm the space.”
Drawing inspiration for the design, she explained that, as a working woman, she found it difficult to ‘switch off’ and relax in the home.
“I love being at home, but I also love being on my own, doing stuff,”
explained Labuschagne.
“I don’t like putting away everything all the time. I want to leave my books on the furniture or my paint out when I’m painting. When I start a puzzle, I want to leave it there and know nobody else will touch it. With a She Shed, you have your own space where nobody can dictate what you do when. It’s a safe space right in the home.”
With the furniture fairly neutral in tone, Labuschagne and her design team will accentuate this with Fuschia Fizz (R2-A1-1), Orange Juice (O3-A1-2), and Lime Miss (Y6-A1-2) colours.
“We will display a queen size ‘vrybank’ which can be used in a She Shed, on the patio or in the garden. All our furniture is just a bit imperfect, channelling the popular Wabi Sabi trend. Our designs, furniture and finishes are all very natural and easy-going. It’s very sturdy and still looks natural.”
The ‘Homestyle’ trend of home greenery will also come into the She Shed.
“People harvest their own fruits and vegetables at home, so we are manufacturing planter boxes and beautiful flower racks. We are also introducing beautiful little ‘grass picnic tables’ which have so many uses.”
Chatting to the Celebrity
Renowned ‘Rhythm City’ actress, radio and TV personality, fitness director, model and motivational speaker – Fiona Nay – is excited to be lending her support to the initiative.
“The importance of She Sheds for the modern woman gives us the opportunity to be free within ourselves,”
commented Nay.
“It’s all about power, positive change and celebrating global gender equality among woman. It also forces us to set time aside from our hectic schedules of being moms and wives, just finding our time.”
Asked what her ideal She Shed design would be, Nay said:
“Autumn Snug with very warm colours…browns, oranges and beiges…lazy calm with a welcoming cabin feel.”
