Kiesha’s debut single speaks to issues around relationships in the digital age
Kiesha may be new on the scene but she is already turning heads. Introverted and artsy, the newly fledged songstress (only 17 years of age) is bold in her approach.
Her debut single ‘Airplane Mode’, released 21 May 2021, is a pop ballad with R&B influences. It is wishful, honest and speaks to issues around relationships in the digital age - platonic and romantic.
She says,
“Who needs healthy communication, when you can put the world on Airplane Mode?”
‘Airplane Mode’ is a commentary on her personal experiences with relationships and developing those relationships in the twenty-first century.

She explains,
“Many teens, including myself, have a hard time online differentiating between platonic and romantic feelings. A lot of the time, teenagers feel pressured into relationships.”
Kiesha sings about wanting to isolate herself from the world and to put her life on airplane mode, as it feels like the best way to deal with the messy feelings that come with confronting the issue.

Complicating the matter even more, Kiesha identifies as bi-sexual. She publicly proclaims that the majority of her relationships with males have felt forced.
The musician adds,
“After 2020, I realized that I have a preference when it comes to dating. I prefer girls, and despite being attracted to guys, relationships with them are always forced and unnatural. However, I still feel pressured into dating guys because my friends and family support my relationships with men more than women. Most of the time, I wish I could switch off everyone and escape somewhere where I don’t feel pressured into liking anyone at all.”
Due to the pandemic, the song took almost half a year to write. Despite a lengthy process, Kiesha is completely happy with the final product and is excited and proud to take it to market.
“It was every bit worth it,”
she says.
“Waking up and knowing I can work on something I am passionate about motivated me during lockdown. The pandemic disrupted a large part of my routine, but being able to make music made me feel productive during stressful times. I’ve written two or three songs in my free time but writing this one was different because I was digging into parts of my personality that I didn’t realize were hidden.”
When asked why she decided to release ‘Airplane Mode’ as her debut single, she explains,
“It is the best thing I’ve ever created. As an artist, I’m constantly creating little pieces of what I consider ‘gold’ and this particular piece represented me as an artist. In my opinion, there is no better song to release as my debut than this because it represents me as a person and the energy I’d like to contribute to the world.”
About Kiesha
South African born and raised, Kiesha, is artsy and flamboyant, yet modest in nature. A multi-disciplinary artist, the young creative, only 17 years of age, is making her debut on the music scene this autumn. Through the years, she has dipped her toes in acting, modeling and ballet, equally successful in each, but singing still remains her first passion.
She says,
“I love exploring different aspects and talents so that I can achieve my highest self.”
Kiesha has been singing since she can remember, having inherited the singing gene from her mother. Fine tuning her talent and technique, the youngster is constantly discovering and improving her voice. Furthermore, the determined musician is self-taught in guitar and ukulele.
Owing a lot of her accomplishments to her mother, Caroline Mkize has always been a major driving force behind Kiesha’s career and ambitions. She raised her daughter to follow her dreams and to be proud of her heritage, especially surrounding her identity. Because of this, Kiesha has spent a large portion of her life discovering who she is. Using songwriting as a catharsis, the songstress similarly uses her talents to express her opinions to the world.
She adds,
“I have always had a love for exploring the similar experiences people go through despite being so different in their upbringing.”
Unlike most artists today, Kiesha speaks her truth. Not focusing on the trends and what’s going on in the world, the singer remains unique in her approach.
She says,
“Artists tend to lose themselves in the noise and the trends. The overwhelming TikTok addictions and social media broadcasts have taken away the fact that music has always been used to communicate feelings and find common ground in those feelings. Every artist has a unique style and message that tends to get drowned out by their need to stay ahead of the crowd. Unlike other artists, my aim is to highlight different perspectives and to stir up the common opinion.”
Kiesha successfully auditioned for the International ARTS Talent Showcase, a platform where artists can showcase their talents and stand a chance to audition for international talent scouts. Here she achieved best overall performer in both singing and acting. Alongside this, she also received a talent-based scholarship to study at the New York Film Academy in 2022.
