About Las Paletas
Las Paletas (Pty) Ltd is directed by Jason Sandell & Diana Chavarro, and is an artisanal Ice Cream and Lolly / Popsicles producer in Cape Town.
All our products are 100% natural and made with only locally sourced ingredients.
What makes us unique: By using only real fruit / dairy and chocolate Las Paletas is a truly healthy and suitable for the whole family to enjoy.
As we only use real live fruit as a flavourant we don't need to add loads of sugar. Thus creating a healthy treat and dessert for all to enjoy anytime of the year.
Las Paletas have been operating for 8 (eight) years and employs 7 (seven) people.
How has the lockdown affected Las Paletas?
For a while Las Paletas was not able to operate due to the lockdown and furthermore to this some of our clients were struggling to make payments to us. Furthermore some of our outlets had to close during periods of the lockdown relating in a huge decrease in sales. Also due to the decrease in salaries across the wide scope of our clientele this has further decreased our monthly sales. We have had to let 1 staff member go and us as owners and directors have for gone our salaries for the last 5 months.

What measures has Las Paletas taken to ensure that they stay afloat during lockdown?
We have dug into our business and personal savings to keep Las Paletas afloat during a stage of zero income while still having month to month expenses stay the same.
Reduce expenses where ever possible
Owners / Directors not taking a salary for the last 5 months
Reduce working hours across the board
Making sure that we work as efficiently as possible, by doing as many deliveries in an area as possible, saving on our monthly fuel expenses
Partnering with online food delivery companies
By reducing our pricing to entice customers to make online purchases
Google: Reviewing our website to see what Google sees, so that when the lockdown ends and potential customers are searching for services we provide, that Google will show our and revelent contact to these potential customers
Why do you think Las Paletas deserves to win the After Fajr Grind Awards?
Las Paletas only employs single African mothers from the surrounding townships in Cape Town. These are often the breadwinners in their families and winning this award will give us further exposure into markets that don't know Las Paletas and in return we hope this to increase our bottom line sales and profitability to keep our staff employed and to create further opportunities for them. Our staff are the lifeblood of Las Paletas and without them we would not be here. This prize if for them, not us as Directors of Las Paletas. It's to keep them employed.
