The Riviera on Vaal Resort, incorporating the Riviera on Vaal Country Club, is located on the banks of the Vaal River in Vereeniging.

The Riviera on Vaal golf course consists of an 18-hole golf course, change room facilities, a nine-hole pitch and putt course, halfway house and modern restaurant facility.

The golf course was opened in 1928 by Sammy Marks who started, the Zuid-Afrikaansche en Oranje Vrystaatsche Mineralen en Mijnbou Vereeniging, which became the basis of the town Vereeniging.

The present clubhouse building was his private residence designed by world renowned architect Sir Herbert Baker and is a registered heritage site.

On January 31st Riviera on Vaal Resort will kick start 2020 with an exciting Golf Day.

The format for the competition of the day is a Betterball Stableford.

Spectacular prizes of over R150 000 is up for grabs, including a cash prize of R100 000 for a hole in one on the 14th hole.

Attendees can look forward to live entertainment including VCR's outside broadcast unit who will broadcast live from 11am.

Entries are still open at R2 500 per player entering a 4 ball, including halfway house, golf cart and prize giving.

This event promises to be the first of many to involve the community and build a better VAAL. The success of such an event is a result of the involvement of both players and sponsors and they would like to offer anyone from the community the opportunity to get involved as a business or individual.

The opening of the spectacular Inyama Grill House will also take place during the evening of the 31st. The event is open to the public and various dignitaries will attend. The restaurant has amazing river views and the menu will support a unique family experience. Another community driven offer available to everyone in the area.

The Riviera on Vaal Resort and Country Club brand has been part of the Vaal Triangle for many years and we proudly support various charities throughout the year.

This year they will also proudly be contributing to Walk For Life and weekly Parkruns, supported by Bruce Fordyce. Parkrun is open to everyone, free, and are safe and easy to take part in. These events take place in the pleasant Resort parkland surroundings and the Riviera on Vaal team would like to encourage people of every ability to take part; from walkers or those taking their first steps in running to Olympians; from juniors to those with more experience; we welcome you all.

“We would like to encourage people to embark on a healthy lifestyle and become more active, while enjoying a beautiful and natural environment. We raise funds through our functions, to keep adding these opportunities to our community for free.”

added Mr Nathi Ndlovu,General Manager for the Resort.

Tourism challenges:

In a study conducted by the Vaal University of Technology they highlighted various factors that could impact the tourism potential of the Vaal region positively or negatively. Water resources and leisure activities were indicated as positive factors for change and growth in the community so desperate for development and jobs. It was evident that

tourism development in Sedibeng can become a catalyst for economic development, poverty alleviation and job creation. Businesspeople using hotels and weekend leisure offerings represent a significant part of the market. A good example of how businessmen with a vision can make a difference is the ‘Proudly Three Rivers Organisation’. The organisation was founded by a group of local businessmen concerned about the ongoing deterioration of the suburb. They realised that unless the community got involved, infrastructure in Three Rivers would drastically deteriorate to a point where families would no longer be able to live a dignified life in an acceptable, safe and healthy environment.

New beginnings:

Three years ago, the owners made a commitment to the Premier of Gauteng to play an active role in tourism development and to extent the Riviera on Vaal Resort. The Riviera on Vaal Resort is an iconic facility and can even be a more prominent catalyst for tourism development in the Vaal. Riviera on Vaal Resorts are perfectly placed to play their role in the larger VAAL community and improve the leisure activities of the surrounding area.

Recently Mr Nathi Ndlovu was appointed as the Resort General Manager. He happens to be the first black GM for the property. Nathi is an experienced, hands-on manager who understands the demands of the Riviera client base and focuses on service delivering. Nathi is also the driver of some exciting new developments relating to the Country Club. His management team has taken charge of the Riviera on Vaal golf course and various initiatives will enhance the golfers’ experiences. Golf is a social activity and members and casual players will benefit from a loyalty program, betterment of the Clubhouse offerings and the new Inyama Grill House. A key objective is to increase black and lady membership to at least 50% of the total number of members by the end of 2020. A new dynamic membership fee structure will soon be introduced. Other initiatives include a drive towards family participation. The facilities and offerings are relaxed, and all standards of players are welcome to join the club and play – all fitting in with the Vaal Tourism drive. ‘Walk for Life’ and ‘Parkrun’ are social activities held on the golf course.

More about the Golf Day on 31 January:

  • Play golf by entering a 4 ball at R2 500 (incl. halfway house, golf cart and Prize giving)

Riviera on Vaal Resort is truly proud to be part of the community.

The hotel offers Gautengers a wonderful recreational resort venue situated right in their backyard.

The inherent attractiveness of the location and facilities are lasting virtues. The Riviera on Vaal Resort is a shining star offering pleasure to all who love the grand dame of the Vaal.
