Serenity Hills celebrates release of rescued buck
With conservation at the heart of this eco-focused estate, Serenity Hills on the KZN South Coast welcomed two new residents on Tuesday, 14 January 2025; a male Grey Duiker and a female Bush Buck.
The animals, released in collaboration with FreeMe Wildlife, will enjoy a new home that blends coastal forest, hills, rock outcrops, grasslands, and plantation forests along the Vungu River.
Ryne Ferguson, Serenity Hills Estate Manager, says the buck were rescued and rehabilitated by FreeMe Wildlife in September 2024, and in need of a safe, new home.
“Some 70 hectares of this 120-hectare coastal estate is pristine conservation space, making it the ideal location for the release of these buck. We have plans for more wildlife introductions to the estate in the coming months as these will help maintain genetic diversity, which is vital for the ecosystem’s health.”
To mark the milestone introduction of the antelope at Serenity Hills, local artist Keith Gait-Smith of K. Creative Arts Studio, will display his intricate Wire Snare Antelope artwork created from 21 wire and cable snares he has personally collected on the farm where he resides.
