There are two moments in a year which are called the Winter Solstice, and the Summer Solstice. Both occur twice at the same time, twice a year - but in different hemispheres.
The solstice is when our planet earth's axis is tilted most closely toward the sun. The hemispheres tilted most toward the sun experiences the longest day of the year, commonly known as the Summer Solstice. While the hemisphere which is tilted away from the sun has its longest night of the year, and is also referred to as the Winter Solstice.
