Surfers will battle it out on the waves for the chance to lift the John Whitmore Cup at this weekend’s Volkswagen SA Open of Surfing in Nelson Mandela Bay

Volkswagen South Africa invites surfing fans and outdoor-loving families to join them and some of South Africa’s top up-and-coming surfers at the grand finale of The City Surf Seriesthis coming weekend 20 to 24 June 2018 at Pipe, Pollock Beach in Nelson Mandela Bay for the Volkswagen SA Open of Surfing presented by Hurley.

Over the five days surfing lovers can expect top class wave riding action as well as all the good things that come with the surfing lifestyle; great surf-ready Volkswagens on display (including any surfer’s dream companions, the California Beach and California Coast), activities and competitions from co-sponsors, cleaner Ocean awareness activities, the best in beach food and beverage vendors - and lots more.

Volkswagen South Africa has been proud to help bring surfing fans the City Surf Series once more, which is now in its second year running. The ‘People’s Car’ has a long-standing history in surfing culture and believes in the opportunity the series presents to local surfers. The iconic brand has remained committed to the City Surf Series first and foremost because of their passion to help drive local surfing and surfers forward. The series, which kicked off in March 2018, is accredited by the World Surfing League (WSL) and is the only surf series in South Africa where local, and international, surfers can earn Qualifying Series (QS) points - the log that leads to a possible spot on the WSL’s Championship Tour. The six part series culminates with this weekend’s event and promises to bring loads of action, in and out of the water.

From a surfing perspective the event hosts junior and senior, men’s and women’s divisions as well as a Longboarding division. And, thanks to the support of Volkswagen South Africa and Nelson Mandela Bay municipality, the women’s premier division in this event has been upgraded to a WSL Qualifying Series rating of 3000, making it the biggest women’s qualifying series in Africa and one of only five in the world. Surfers will be competing for the chance to lift up the prestigious John Whitmore Cup – the floating trophy named after the late ‘doyen’ of South African surfing, and the first person in the country to own a locally produced Volkswagen Kombi.

In celebration of global Ocean Awareness Month this June, Volkswagen will also be driving an environmental message with an emphasis on the Ocean’s plastic waste crisis. Spectators are invited to take pictures surfing Volkswagen’s recycled plastic Wave or posing with the giant plastic waste Jellyfish and to post their pictures on social media as a symbol of their promise to ride the wave towards a cleaner ocean.

Families can explore, learn and get involved with activities on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, including a “Trash to Treasure” craft section for the kids to create an ocean creature out of recycled plastic.

Join South Africa’s top surfers for the final installment of the City Surf Series at the Volkswagen SA Open of Surfing presented by Hurley.
