Today, 18 March 2021, a few members of the media were invited to connect with two of Starbucks' world-class baristas, Vusi and Victor - at the first store which opened in South Africa in 2016, the Rosebank Reserve store.

The Coffee Masters, Vusi and Victor, shared stories about Starbucks' strong heritage, the high quality standard of every cup served by a Starbucks barista, and the importance of social responsibility from the leading multi-national coffeehouse chain.

Human Rights Day is observed on the 21st March in South Africa, and Starbucks are celebrating the month of March by highlighting their mission to inspire and nurture the human spirit one person, one cup and one neighbourhood at a time through the power of human connections.

Vusi and Victor also educated us in the fundamentals of brewing a good cup of coffee at home, as well as shared a few tips with us at the coffee tasting at Starbucks, in Rosebank.

The 4 Fundamentals of Brewing Coffee:

  1. Proportion – the ratio of water to coffee needs to be balanced at all times.
  1. Grind setting – the grind needs to be as accurate as possible.
  1. Freshness – the fresher the bean, the more you get out of the bean itself.
  1. Hot filtered water – the water needs to be filtered.

The 4 Steps on How to Taste your Coffee:

1. Smell your coffee – This step is to distinguish the flavours before you actually taste the coffee. Why? To get the aroma of the coffee; how the coffee smells, determines how the coffee might taste.

2. Slurp – in the coffee world, this is acceptable and highly appreciated because it allows you to spray the coffee around your palette.

3. Locate the body of your coffee – Sip, let it roll around in your palette, then swallow, check how heavy it is. The use of milk (or no milk) also plays a role in this step. If you use non-fat milk, the flavour washes off. If you use 2% milk, it lingers for a period of time and if you use full cream milk, it will linger the most.

4. Pairing – pair your coffee with something that will complement the flavour and taste of the coffee. In this step, you can also determine what time of the day you can have your coffee; what type of day you are having, and what would you like to pair it with that will help you to best enjoy it.

To experience first hand what we had learnt, we had a taste of the Starbucks Anniversary Blend in Dark Roast.

The Coffee Masters served us a cup of the Anniversary Blend which they brewed in a French Press, and allowed us to use the knowledge that we learnt on how to taste our coffee.

They then took it a step further and filtered the rich aromatic brewed Anniversary Blend, and gave us an even more defined Blend through the use of a Chemex.

For those who are not familiar, the Chemex is used to filter the oily parts of the coffee, giving it more flavour and clarity in the coffee. Thus, filtering gives an experience of a cleaner cup of coffee.
