Over 160 Volkswagen Group South Africa (VWSA) employees continued the legacy of Nelson Mandela by volunteering their time and energy at Rebontsheng Primary School in Vosloorus, east of Johannesburg.

VWSA employees and their loved ones joined hands on Saturday, 25 August to uplift and renovate the primary school.  This 23-year old primary school has 1 200 registered learners who attend classes from Grade R to Grade 7.  The school was opened in 1995 is located in an area which is characterised by high levels of poverty and unemployment.

Despite these socio-economic challenges, the school has dedicated teachers and enthusiastic learners who are excelling at their studies.

More than 160 volunteers assisted with the revamp of the Grade 3 classrooms, creating reading corners, planting a vegetable garden and installing a vegetable tunnel.

This year VWSA partnered with Rise Against Hunger which is a non-profit organisation that aims to eradicate hunger by providing food and life-changing aid to the most vulnerable people.

VWSA’s target of packing 100 000 meal packs during its Show of Hands Employee Volunteerism programme in 2018 was met when the last 25 000 meal packs were packed. Other meals were packed during similar events held in Uitenhage and Port Elizabeth.

VWSA also donated over a year’s supply of sanitary towels to the girl learners. The donation was made possible by a long-standing partnership with the Imbumba Foundation’s Caring for Girls Programme.

“Each year we embark on our Show of Hands Volunteer programmes and at every single event I am humbled by our employees‘ willingness to give off their time to improve the lives of others,"

said Nonkqubela Maliza, Director of Corporate and Government Affairs: Volkswagen Group South Africa.
