The International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, observed on September 16th, focuses on raising awareness about the importance of the ozone layer and the efforts needed to protect it.
The ozone layer is a part of Earth’s atmosphere that absorbs most of the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Without it, we’d be exposed to much higher levels of UV, which can cause serious health issues like skin cancer and cataracts, and also harm the environment and wildlife.
The day commemorates the signing of the Montreal Protocol in 1987, an international agreement aimed at phasing out substances that damage the ozone layer, like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) found in things like aerosol sprays and refrigerants. Thanks to this protocol, the ozone layer is slowly recovering, but ongoing efforts and vigilance are necessary to ensure its full restoration.
So, this day is about celebrating the progress we've made in protecting the ozone layer and reinforcing the commitment to continue these efforts for the health of our planet.
Let us know what you are doing to protect and preserve our ozone layer in your area, or what your community is doing and we can publicise them.
