Floria Tosca graces The Nelson Mandela Theatre stage at Joburg Theatre
Three Acts, Two Intervals, One Spectacular Performance: Tosca
Cape Town Opera together with the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra and Sempre Opera Chorus' latest production of Tosca opened its curtains last night at the Nelson Mandela Theatre at the Joburg Theatre.
One of composer Giacomo Puccini's greatest operas set in 19th Century Rome, was brought to life in Johannesburg in a fully immersive experience - with an impressive set and costume design which made you see and feel as though you were in Rome, the euphonious sounds from the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra and harmonious voices of the cast to soothe your earbuds, and the beautiful aroma of frankincense to top the sensory experience - which all warmed our hearts on the bitterly cold Johannesburg evening.
Tosca is a romantic tragedy about a celebrated opera singer Floria Tosca portrayed by soprano Nobulumko Mngxekeza, her lover - the painter Mario Cavaradossi played by tenor Lukhanyo Moyake, and the corrupt chief of police Baron Scarpia, performed by baritone Conroy Scott.
The story takes place in a time frame of just less than a day and the breath-taking performance by the Cape Town Opera guides us through the three acts, from the Attavanti private chapel in Act I, Baron Scarpia's home in Act II, and Act III which is set at the execution site.
An intense expression of love, betrayal, and lust, with an experience which an 8K television could never come close to, is awaiting you at the Joburg Theatre until 30 July.
