8 unique team-building getaways to try on the KZN South Coast
Companies looking to boost morale, improve workplace connections, and ultimately improve productivity across the board should consider a team-building travel retreat. Warm weather, beautiful scenery, and engaging outdoor activities are called for – and the KZN South Coast is the ultimate getaway!
“Team building and company getaways are an effective and welcome way for organisations to work together and forge a productive path forward,”
explains Dr Vusumuzi Sibiya, CEO of South Coast Tourism and Investment Enterprise (SCTIE).
“The KZN South Coast - with its great accommodation, conference venues, outdoor adventures, and Blue Flag Beaches - is fast becoming a top team-building destination. Businesses are discovering the full-service offerings of this region that meet budgets and business goals, while providing guests with a unique experience. Now’s the time to book a team-building getaway on the KZN South Coast – and we have some great places to share.”
An increasingly popular MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences, and events) destination, the KZN South Coast offers corporate retreats at its seaside hotels, countryside resorts and game lodges. While many venues do offer team-building activities as an added service, other sites will give individual event organisers freedom to co-ordinate their team-building activities using on-site facilities.
1. Wild 5 Adventures
For an adrenaline-induced, outdoor experience, companies should consider booking at Wild 5 Adventures in Oribi Gorge. Wild 5 Adventures has Dynamic Team Developers who will customise a programme that delivers the required results for your organisation. The team is mobile, so they can host team-building events at any KZN South Coast venue of choice, but the on-site adventures at Oribi Gorge are fantastic. There’s the world’s highest gorge swing, quad biking, abseiling, zip-line, paintball and more! The team offers Silly Olympics, Mild2Wild5, and The Ultimate Challenge, tailoring all the activities to the team size and preferences.
2. Lake Eland Game Reserve
There are a lot of teambuilding activities to choose from at the stunning Lake Eland Game Reserve in Oribi Gorge. Colleagues will connect while looking for wildlife on a self-drive game drive, or crossing the thrilling 80m suspension bridge or incredible zipline tour. There are also great trails for biking, hiking, or even horseback riding, as well as 4×4 tracks, fishing and picnic sites. Finish off with a fun game of competitive paintball! The on-site Kudu Conference Centre hosts up to 50 people, with Oribi Hall for even more, with nearby chalets for overnight stays and a great team-building and braai area.
3. TO Strand
This stunning Leisure Bay resort boarders the beach, which makes it a great team-building venue as guests can stay on-site and use the beach for endless activities. They also offer team-building and day tours which includes choosing four activities from the list: kayak challenge, raft building, beach Olympics, surfing challenge, putt putt, amazing race, target shooting, paintball, wall climbing, leadership training, and much more!
4. The Pont Holiday and Water Sport Resort
Nestled in the Umtamvuna Valley next to the Umtamvuna River Estuary, The Pont is a heritage site and the gateway between KZN and the Transkei. The location makes this the ideal water-based team-building experience, with kayaking, skiing, boating, and fishing some of the great activities to consider. There are 45 campsites for an overnight retreat, with great facilities including a swimming pool, kids’ playpark, and braai areas, as well as a bar and restaurant on the river’s edge.
5. Bellevue Guest House and Eco Park
This is the ideal nature-based retreat set on 11 hectares of spacious gardens and subtropical forest – ideal for outdoor team-building adventures. Found midway between Ramsgate and Southbroom, Bellevue overlooks the Imbezane River which can be incorporated into the planned team-building events, with the botanical garden home to more than 200 species of indigenous trees. There is also affordable self-catering accommodation, making this the perfect site for a business retreat.
6. River Valley Nature Reserve
Event organisers looking for an affordable campsite in the middle of a nature reserve should book at River Valley in Margate. This is limited to just 5 sites on a shady section of the iVungu Riverbank, with antelope and small mammals roaming freely. Team-building activities on-site include bird watching, fishing, hiking, and picnicking in this stunning KZN South Coast reserve. The dam and river attract more than 130 bird species, and anglers can fish for bass and tilapia at the nearby dam.
7. Happy Wanderers Beachfront Holiday Resort
This is a private resort located on 500m of the unspoilt Kelso Beach, making it the perfect team-building playground for any organisation. There are self-catering apartments, private log cabins, and a campsite with 86 sites located under Milkwood trees right by the ocean. Visitors can enjoy the on-site restaurant and bar, with a conference venue for corporate retreats requiring some more formalised engagement.
8. Crocworld Conservation Centre
For something a little different, corporates can consider a day trip to the Scottburgh-based Crocworld Conservation Centre, home to a variety of birds, reptiles, and other interesting animals. Visitors enjoy a daily talk and demonstration – either of the on-site snakes or crocodile feeds – with insight given into local conservation efforts. The centre is also home to world-famous Henry the Nile crocodile who, at 124 years old, is the oldest known Nile crocodile on the planet. Crocworld is also home to Jikaleza Outdoor Adventures – an aerial ziplining adventure that is ideally suited to team-building fun.
