Africa Day 2015
Africa Day – 25th May 2015
Did you know about Africa Day before this year ? Did you know that it even existed ? To those of you who did, kudos ! I hope you managed to commemorate this day in the best possible way and to make other Africans proud.
For those of you who didn’t, here is a little background regarding Africa Day :
Africa Day is observed on the 25th May as a reminder of the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which took place on that exact date in 1963. Leaders of 30 of the 32 independent Africans states signed a founding charter in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
In 2002, the OAU established its own successor, the African union (AU). The African Union, includes 53 member states and has brought together the continent of Africa to collectively address the challenges it has faced, such as armed conflict, climate change, and poverty.
Whilst this day should truly be a memorable one, it should be noted that Africa day is observed as a public holiday in only 6 African countries. These countries are : Ghana, Mali, Namibia, Zambia, Lesotho and Zimbabwe.
