"Tweede Nuwe Jaar" is Afrikaans for "Second New Year."
It is a unique cultural celebration observed in Cape Town (here in South Africa) on the 2nd of January particularly among the Cape Coloured and Cape Malay communities.
Historically, the day was linked to the celebration of freedom for those who were enslaved during the Dutch colonial era.
In more recent times, it has evolved into a day of cultural expression to celebrate the heritage and preserve the traditions, but also to come together as a community and celebrate life.
On Saturday, 4 January 2025, the parade, which will consist of 20 000 performers from 18 minstrel troupes, will make their way from District 6 towards Bo-Kaap.
The parade will impact several roads around the Cape Town CBD from 6am to 11:55pm, as it is expecting over 80 000 spectators.
With its vibrant colours, sounds, and spirit, this event is a reflection of the diverse and multicultural society of Cape Town, bringing people from all walks of life together in celebration.
